ORCHESTRATION
I Have a Dream is an opening into the world of Mearra. This orchestration is slow tempo to express the mood of the early morning, before the dawn. For the theatrical stage version, it is delivered by a traveling minstrel in bardic prose with a single spotlight on the stage. There is a hint of a dancing woman seen around the minstrel, whose dress hem touches the spotlight as mist upon water.
Open Sea shows the feeling of adventure as Aed travels the world of Mearra making maps of each island he discovers. Due to the rare tidal events of the planet, it takes an expert sailor to traverse the open seas and Aed is one of the most masterful sea captains and cartographers known. His maps are sought after, as there are island chains only seen by him.
Dream Lovers is the tale of our main characters Aed and Kleito. Beginning with Aed’s tale of adventure and followed by Kleito’s tale of island life. The female vocal on this orchestration is sang by Marya Stark, with Cohen performing Aed’s parts. This is a key song in the overview theme of the love story central to the musical. Aed sings from the bow of his ship, while Kleito sings from her cliff home edge.
How Can It Be is a light hearted song sang in rounds by each of the main characters, expressiing the love triangle of the story. This orchestration has only one voice to show the melody that will be sung by Kleito, Tane and Aed in the production. It will feature choreographed dancing by a troupe of 5 dancers, and theatrical vignettes showing each of the characters trade. Tane mending nets and preparing the boat, Kleito at the cove of sunrise, and Aed at the helm of his ship with a map.
Quest to feature a Shinobue flute solo melody. This orchestration is a short version. The full composition is followed by a Taiko troupe that sets the melody upon a rising tidal force. The motif is repeated until we arrive at the coming storm.
Storm into Descent is the apex of change in the musical. The storm is the catalyst that brings the dream lovers together. In this saga of loss and love, each character must let go of what they treasure most, only to find the sea brings gifts beyond their wildest dreams. Following the Storm and Descent orchestrations, we arrive at the final melodies and resolutions of the story. Those motifs lead us to the final moment when Kleito and Aed recognize each other for the first time.
STORY
On an oceanic planet with two binary moons, a pearl diver named Kleito lives on an island with her daughter Minowin. Every day, Kleito collects pearls and stores her treasures in hidden rooms of her cliffside home. Every night, she dreams of a man whose eyes compel her with knowing, yet his face and body continually change form. She keeps these dreams secret from her lover Tane, a local fisherman with secrets of his own. At sea, Captain Áed travels by sun, stars, and moons through unknown waters, mapping the world of Mearra. Each night, he dreams of an ever-changing woman, yet her eyes remain the same.
One day, an unprecedented storm hits, sweeping the fisherman out to sea. Lightning strikes Aed's ship and sinks it. He falls into the churning depths. When the storm passes, Kleito stands at shore, scanning the waterfront, waiting for Tane to return. Instead, she sees a strange man floating in the waters. She rescues him, not recognizing Áed, her dream lover, as his eyes are closed as he is unconscious. As Kleito works to save this stranger's life, she wonders, who is he? And where is Tane?
In this saga of loss and love, each character must let go of what they treasure most, only to find the sea brings gifts beyond their wildest dreams.
